Schools Honor Ruby Bridges with Annual Walk to School Day

On November 14, schools across the South celebrated the legacy of 6-year-old Ruby Bridges by participating in their annual Walk to School Day. In 1960, Ruby made history by integrating an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, where she was escorted by four U.S. Marshals after local officials refused her protection. Her bravery and resilience in the face of such adversity allowed her to attend class regularly until graduation. Today, Bridges is a civil rights icon and continues to inspire through her activism. She established the Ruby Bridges Foundation, fostering tolerance, preserving history, and encouraging future generations to uphold the ideals of equity and unity.
