Fulton County Board of Health hosts support group during National Breastfeeding Month

August is National Breastfeeding Month! It’s a time used to highlight the importance and the benefits of breastfeeding. The Fulton County Board of Health’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program provides resources to help women learn about breastfeeding and support them throughout the process.

Breastfeeding coordinators with our WIC program recently hosted a support group to inspire and encourage mothers who want to learn about breastfeeding or who may need resources to assist them on their journey. The event was held Thursday, August 6, during world breastfeeding week, at our Adamsville location. The women in attendance were able to learn breastfeeding facts, talk to other mothers about their breastfeeding journeys, and participate in a few rounds of bingo to win prizes. At the end of the event, attendees were asked to leave notes of encouragement for other mothers who may be on the fence about breastfeeding or currently going through the process.

Research has shown that breastfeeding provides essential nutrients for an infant’s early development and delivers antibodies that strengthen a child’s resistance to illness and infection. Along with the nutritional aspect, breastfeeding is also very sustainable by serving as a natural, zero-waste food source that supports environmental and food security goals.
