COLLEGE PARK – The Georgia Department of Public Health’s environmental health division teamed up with the Fulton County Board of Health’s environmental health department to host a special event training in preparation for the international soccer community coming to Atlanta. The session was a refresher course on various protocols as our environmental health team prepares for the world soccer competition to bring games to Atlanta.
“These types of refresher trainings are important in order to make sure we’re up to speed and ready for major temporary events like the World Cup,” says Dr. Brandon Leftwich, Environmental Health Director at the Fulton County Board of Health.
The session was a reminder on topics such as permitting and inspecting food vendors at temporary events, how to handle complaints at hotels, and swimming pool inspection protocols. The Fulton County Board of Health has three environmental health offices: 10 Park Place Health Center located in downtown Atlanta, College Park Regional Health Center in College Park, and the Fulton County Health and Human Services – North facility in Alpharetta. Members from all three offices were in attendance.
Atlanta will host eight matches in this year’s World Cup. The dates are June 15, 18, 21, 24, 27 and July 1, 7, and 15. All games will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which will be referred to as Atlanta Stadium during the event to comply with FIFA regulations that prohibit the use of corporate sponsor names in stadium titles. Along with these matches, the city is expected to host an array of events centered around the tournament.
